The final of this year’s Greyhound Derby takes place at Wimbledon this Saturday evening, June 29th. It’s been a fabulous competition thus far and there is sure to be more thrill and spills this weekend over the 480m trip with a first prize of £150,000 up for grabs. Once again, there is full coverage of the meeting on satellite TV, with Sky Sports showing all the action live. The finals of both the finals of both the Derby Plate and the Champion Hurdle will also be on Saturday evening’s Wimbledon card.
Last Saturday night’s first semi finals saw a huge shock as long time favourite for the Derby, Barrie Draper trained Ballymac Eske, went crashing out of the competition. The 9/4 chance was never really in with a shout at any stage of the race and trailed in last in a disappointing time of 28.94s. Droopys Jet has taken up the mantle at the head of the Derby betting in recent weeks and Fraser Black’s runner showed exactly why with another excellent display, winning the race in a time of 28.38s. Droopys Jet crashed out at last season’s semi final stage but this year has every chance in the final from trap two.
The second semi final saw Ballymac Vic ease to victory in the fastest time of the evening, 28.29s. Sidaz Jack started the race very well indeed but was ultimately no match for Ballymac Vic once Liam Dowling’s greyhound reached top gear. Ladbrokes currently go a stand out 7/4 about the Irish runner for Saturday night. Airlie Impact ran a great race to grab second spot, while Charlie Lister’s Sidaz Jack held on for third.
With Ballymac Vic being placed in trap three, the prices for the final changed somewhat once the draw was made. The danger is the three dog cutting across the two runners on his inside, one of which is favourite Droopys Jet in two while Sidaz Jack comes out of trap one. The potential for trouble is definitely there and finals don’t always go the way the form book would suggest. Could it be that one of the wide runners could take advantage of a coming together on the inside? Of those, I’d say the orange jacket comes into the race with the best recent numbers. Bittles Bar is on offer at 10/1 with Ladbrokes and while my heart says Droopys Jet, my head says something different.
