Pat Rosney’s Windy Millar landed the Betfred Select Stakes in style last night, giving the trainer his second victory in the race. The £7,500 feature race of the night at Nottingham was excepted to go the way of Charlie Lister with him having three of the six runners and dominating the betting but things didn’t go to plan.
Although Lister’s Farloe Reason was best away, Windy Millar broke well too and was in front just after the first bend. Windy Millar proved impossible to pass and went on to win by almost three lengths in a time of 26.69sec.
Windy Millar’s trainer Pat Rosbey said: “Getting him round the corner in front has always been the thing with this dog, but when he does he’s very, very good. He’s only ever led once and been beaten, at Wimbledon, and I was really surprised but it was after a ling lay-off.”
In the other big race of the evening the Betfred Select Stayers Stakes, short priced favourite Midway Skipper made hard work of things but eventually wore down Swift Messenger to win at odds of 4/6 in a time of 44.94sec.
After the race, Midway Skipper’s trainer Henry Chalkley had this to say: “I don’t think she really got into her stride until off the last bend, she seemed quite hesitant to take the inside for some reason. But she’s just getting herself really right from seasonal break, we’ve worked her quite hard and she deserved it.”
