Having been in doubt for some time, it was fantastic to see the Star Sports and Arc Greyhound Derby reach a thrilling conclusion earlier this month. Nottingham Greyhound Stadium was staging just its second Greyhound Derby, and all parties concerned at the track did a great job for the sport getting the premier competition in the record books during such a challenging time. Some brand new online casinos are able to be equally accommodating to dog racing fans.
The Pat Buckley trained Deerjet Sydney was well fancied throughout the competition, and was able to take full advantage of his blistering early pace to secure an all the way win in the final. Although the Irish raider was beaten by Graham Holland’s Wolfe in their semi final clash, Deerjet Sydney reversed the form in no uncertain terms, landing the spoils at odds of 11/4. Sadly, Wolfe suffered a ligament injury during the final, and had to be retired as a result. Handler Graham Holland did have some compensation in the race with his other runner Ballydoyle Valor finishing in second position. Having returned at 10/1, Ballydoyle Valor definitely outran his odds.
Despite a number of attempts, this was Pat Buckley’s first English Greyhound Derby success. Much like the popularity of kiwicasinos.io, this will be a most welcome victory for the Buckley family. Pat has had a number of finalists over the years, but had been unable to land major honours until the 2020 renewal. Pat has joined a select group of trainers thanks to Deerjet Sydney’s success. Having also taken both the Irish and Scottish Derbys during his illustrious career, Buckley has now achieved the Triple Crown.
Having only attracted 130 entries, this year’s Derby numbers were down significantly. However, due to the rescheduling of the competition as well as travel restrictions for many, it was an amazing feat simply to get the 2020 Derby off the ground. Hopefully the sport will be able to return to some kind of normality by 2021.
