It may be a year since Walthamstow Greyhound Stadium was forced to close but a number of the greyhounds that were regular runners there still remain homeless. Over 40 dogs are being cared for at Whittingham Kennels, near Waltham Abbey, Essex.
Most of the dogs are still young and healthy and would make ideal pets.
“Greyhounds make wonderful pets,” said kennels owner Johanna Beumer, who has been looking after retired greyhounds for 43 years.
“There is no comparison to the dog you see racing around the track to the dog going home with you, who is a real couch potato and an absolute softy.”
Louise Clark who also works at the kennels says the greyhounds need very little exercise.
“People think they need lots of exercise, but in fact it’s the complete opposite,” she said.
“Because they are sprinters they do a short burst then they are absolutely exhausted.
“The dogs make great family pets as they are very gentle and love children.”
