The William Hill Northern Puppy Derby Final takes place this Thursday 15th October at Sunderland Greyhound Stadium and is live on Sky Sports Xtra, channel 404 from 7.30pm. The race is run over 450m and there is £8,000 on offer to the winning greyhound.
Droopys Kez won the event in 2008, giving trainer Ted Soppit his third derby victory in four years in the process.
Betting for the 2009 renewal of the Northern Puppy Derby sees Westmead Carl and Ten Large Down vying for favouritism. Ten Large Down made a serious impression in Saturday night’s semi finals winning his heat in 26.98sec which was the fastest time of the evening. Westmead Carl was victorious in a fractionally slower time of 27.05sec. The other heat was won by Greenwell Viper in a significantly slower time of 27.44sec.
It’s hard to separate the front two in the market but I’m inclined to stick with the Nick Savva trained Westmead Carl. He’s been in rude health since the start of September with 5 victories from 6 starts and the defeat was by a very small margin to the ultra consistent Lenson Bolt. Westmead Carl has his favoured one box and can score from Ten Large Down with Killieford Fire fancied to squeeze out the Greenwell dogs to make up the tricast.
