This Saturday night sees the Final of the 2012 Greyhound Derby taking place at Wimbledon. The semi finals threw up a number of shocks, with the hot favourite Razldazl Jayfkay crashing out of the event following trouble after the first bend, allowing Farloe Ironman to win at generous odds of 16/1. Another well fancied runner Coolavanny Bert managed to recover and snatch second place. William Hill make Coolavanny Bert their 5/2 joint favourite alongside last year’s winner Taylors Sky, with Farloe Ironman just behind the pair at 3/1.
Westmead Adonis, Judicial Ruling and Blonde Snapper make up the six finalists. The Mark Wallis trained Blonde Snapper cause somewhat of a surprise in the other semi, putting up an impressive display to hold off the unlucky Taylors Sky. Charlie Lister’s dog hasn’t really hit top form as yet but has managed to get through each round in workmanlike fashion and now has the opportunity to make it back to back English Derby wins. While Coolavanny Bert from trap two looks to have strong claims, I have to side with last year’s winner. I like the way he has made it through to the final under the radar and he is now in prime position to take his second Derby title.
