2012 English Derby sponsors William Hill are the only bookmaker offering odds on this year’s Greyhound Trainers Championship. Currently leading the way as far as the title is concerned is Kelly Findlay. Kelly is currently an 8/1 chance with Hills which seems generous given her prize money total of £11,525. Nearest challenger Mark Wallis is back on £4,925 but he is the market leader at odds of 11/8. The final result is decided on points gained however but Kelly is also someway ahead on that front too. She has 91 to Wallis’ 64. Wallis knows all too well that it isn’t prize money that wins the day where the Greyhound Trainers Championship is concerned as he amassed £120,940 last year to the winner’s £89,405 but was still beaten to the title on points.
Chris Allsopp won the 2011 crown after a tight battle between himself, Charlie Lister and Mark Wallis. Although Allsopp had the lowest prize money total of the three trainers, he topped the points total with 887. This was 30 points more than Wallis, and 37 more than Lister.
Personally I think Kelly Findlay is the value bet at 8/1. Although she will have to go some to match the big yards of Allsopp, Wallis and Lister, she is landing some big prizes in the early stages of the season and should give punters a decent run for their money.
