It’s a Friday night, so that means that the RPGTV cameras will be heading to both Romford and Sunderland for a total of 26 races for greyhound punters to enjoy. Romford host the pick of this evening’s racing, with the first heats of the Golden Sprint Trial Stakes taking place, and 13 open races in all. The show gets under way at 7:15pm on Sky channel 212 and Freesat channel 401. Here are our best bets for Friday, February 27th.
20:02 Romford
A 400m flat contest, this race is the first Golden Sprint Trial of the evening, and the bookies are struggling to split the first four in the betting. The six dog Dragon Big Bux looks to hold sway with most firms, and it’s William Hill who go a stand out price of 11/4 about Kevin Hutton’s greyhound. Although this greyhound has not been seen here at Romford since January of last year, he has been showing decent form elsewhere over shorter trips, and arrives here off the back of an impressive victory at Sittingbourne last week. The plum draw in six is also a positive as far as the chances of Dragon Big Bux are concerned. I am going to be backing the four dog Dower Matt here in the hope that the brief break and couple of recent trials over course and distance will see Ernie Gaskin’s greyhound return to his best. Dower Matt is more than up to collecting this prize, and was in fine form at the back end of last year, winning four races in succession over course and distance. Take the 7/2 on offer with Ladbrokes.
Back Trap 4 Dower Matt at 7/2 with Ladbrokes
20:50 Romford
This marathon 750m event has the makings of a very exciting race, and looks to rest between one, five and six. It’s the orange jacket of Flawless Floyd who the bookies rate the most likely winner, with Jim Reynolds’ greyhound a best price 13/8 chance. While I very much respect the chances of this dog, he has put in three races average performances in succession, and he was quite disappointing here last week, beaten seven lengths by Sky Star Mirren when starting favourite. I’m willing to oppose at the same kind of odds, and it could well be that the bitch in six Lodge Lady can prove up to the task. Phil Simmonds has given this greyhound three trials here at Romford since she was acquired from Ireland, and her form reads quite well to me. William Hill go 2/1 about the striped jacket, which seems on the generous side and I can see Lodge Lady going off slightly shorter come post time.
