The competition began with heats at Doncaster Greyhound Stadium in November, and saw six teams battle it out for a place in the Greyhound Premier League. In much the same way snooker and darts have used the Premier League format to appeal to a wider audience, the Greyhound Owners’ Breeders’ And Trainers’ Association (GOBATA) are hoping that this will appeal to people that might not normally be fans of greyhound racing.

The Premier League season is spread over eight weeks and consists of four legs. Each of these legs is a kind of mini trainers championship, with five races taking place and points awarded dependant on finishing positions. The fourth leg will be Grand Finals night where the team at the top of the league will be awarded the Premier League title, while the two bottom placed teams will be relegated to the Championship.

Each leg is made up of the following five races;
2 standard four-bend races
1 puppy four-bend race
1 stayers race
1 sprint race

The event is run over a trip of 714 metres and this year’s competition get under way on the 30th January. This is a staying event which suits greyhounds that get a decent trip. There are a number of races over the 714m distance at Crayford throughout the year and dogs based at the track obviously have an advantage when it comes to the Golden Jacket.

Trial’s for the 2012 Ladbrokes Golden Jacket began this past weekend with three races providing clues for the competition. The Maxine Locke trained Honeypound Joe took the opening race in a time of 46.42. The odds on favourite experience one or two problems during the race but eventually won by a comfortable three and a half length margin. Honeypound Joe is a 20/1 chance for the main prize with sponsors Ladbrokes.

7/1 shot Bold Misty sprung a surprise in the second trial of the day when winning by just under five lengths in a time of 46.39. Attempting the trip for the first time, Julie Luckhurst’s bitch looked rather impressive and earns a quote of 33/1 off the back of that success. The third and final Golden Jacket trial saw by far the best performance of the day when U Make Me Smile, also trained by Luckhurst, won by more than five lengths in a time of 45.75. This runner is now sure to be popular with punter and is still available at a generous looking 25/1 with the sponsors.

The 2011 Golden Jacket was won by the Kelly Findlay trained Bush Paddy. The same connections send 10/1 second favourite Bush Whitney into battle for this year’s event. Already a winner of seven open races during her short career, this bitch holds strong claims.

There is an exciting new development for greyhound racing fans this week as the Racing Post launch their brand new greyhound TV channel. The action is broadcast live on Sky and Freesat. Below you can find all the information on the new channel. This was sent over to us by the Racing Post themselves.

Racing Post Greyhound TV is now just one day away from its inaugural broadcast on Friday 9 December. From 7.15pm to 10.45pm on Sky digital channel 231 and freesat channel 402, live racing will be shown from Romford and Sunderland, the former featuring the semis of the Coral Essex Vase. For those with Virgin, the show is available to view on www.racingpost.com and other founders’ websites.

The three-times-a-week programme will feature a new line-up of presenters at the helm including Errol Blyth, Jason Barrasford and Darrell Williams, while the Racing Post will provide expert analysis through reporters, Jonathan Hobbs, Jonathan Kay and Phil Donaldson.

Clive Lawrence, producer of Racing Post Greyhound TV commented: “The programme is going to be fast and furious with racing every seven minutes. This is really all about the racing and that’s what we will be focusing on, along with bringing the excitement of live greyhound action into living rooms across the country.”

John McCririck added: “This is terrific, especially with people like Errol and Darrell involved. Punters will lap this up, given channel 231 comes free. I think it will be a great success, develop over the months ahead and re-energise enthusiasm to come racing.”

Lord Donoughue, influential peer and chairman of the Review Group that led to the inauguration of the GBGB said: “I greatly enjoy the greyhounds on TV when we get it – and so am delighted there will be more to come. All best wishes for a great success with the project.”

Are you thinking of placing a bet on the upcoming races? Not sure which bookmakers to use? Why not check out coral.co.uk for all the latest odds!

The event is held at Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium and takes place of a trip of 480m. There is £8,500 on offer in total prize money with £6,000 of that going to the winning greyhound.

Charlie Lister’s Silverview Perky is the current 5/4 market leader for the title with bet365. Although she was very impressive in the early stages of the competition, this bitch was beaten by the John Gammon trained Spinkys Nod in the semi finals. Spinkys got away from the traps extremely well to win by a length and a quarter from Silverview Perky in a time of 28.78sec.

The second semi final was won by the Dean Childs trained Droopys Loner who was successful by a length in 28.88sec from another Charlie Lister hopeful, Boher Princess. This means Lister will now be double handed in this year’s William Hill Oaks Final. Big outsider Droopys Aretha also managed to make it through to the final by finishing in third spot. The bookies don’t give her much chance in the race however, with bet365 giving a huge quote of 33/1.

Monday night’s card from Nottingham saw trainer Charlie Lister win three of the fifteen races. Firstly in the 8.04pm, 4/6f Bucks Blade was successful in a time of 29.49. This open race was staged over a distance of 480m and was heat 1 of the Stadium Bookmakers Puppy Trophy. The second heat was won by 3/1 chance Mays Harvestmoon in a time of 29.06.

Boher Paddy was Lister’s second winner of the evening. Another odds on chance at 4/7f, this dog took the 480m race in a time of 30.09 by a huge five and a half length margin. The trainer’s third and final winner of the evening was a slightly better price for punters at the 7/1 mark. Jordan Light took the 500m open race by three and a half lengths from Tyrur Brian, also at 7/1.

The big race of the evening was the Corona Sprint Trophy which was won by Pat Curtin’s Farloe Ashes who was winning his seventh race in only nine career starts. The 4/5f won in a time of 18.10 by one and a quarter lengths from Tictac Diamond.

Betfred sponsored four of the races on the Nottingham card but a number of greyhound tracks are looking for sponsors with UK online bingo games among the companies being considered.

The first round heats of this year’s Yorkshire St Leger saw Kelly Findlay’s Fleeting Image record a time of 41.53 seconds and jump to the head of the ante post betting market in the process. bet365 have installed Fleeting Image as the 5/2 market leader for the event. The Charlie Lister trained Lonely Boy was a little disappointing in his heat on Friday night and the 4/7f could only manage third place after being forced to check at the 4th bend. The bookmakers are taking no chances with Lister’s charge however and he is still at the business end of the market as the 3/1 second favourite.

Curragh Kewell (41.94sec), Droopys Arshavin (41.98sec) and Wonder Wag (42.14sec) were the winners of the three other heats. None of them came close to the time Fleeting Image posted and it will be very interested to see if the Findlay runner can perform to the same level out of trap one in the semis.

The semi finals take place this Friday night 11th November, with the final taking place live on Sky Sports on Wednesday November 16th. There is £8,000 up for grabs and it’s sure to be a cracking night of live Sky action.

Sky Sports 3 will be showing the Injured Jockeys Fund Night at Harlow this Tuesday night. The coverage gets underway at 7.30pm with eight live races being shown throughout the evening. First up at 7.40pm is the Lorraine Elliot 1967 Birthday Stakes. This open race event offers £500 to the winning greyhound and is run over a trip of 415m. Tipp Are Back in Trap 1 has shown some consistent form in recent races and could be the one to beat.

At 8.00pm we have the The S.Walsh Recycling & Construction Solutions Sprint over a very short trip of 238m, again with a purse of £500. Wide runner Romeo Dasher in the 6 box has plenty over solid numbers over these minimum distances and looks to hold strong claims.

The Isaacson Electrical & Rexel Senate Maxi Marathon is off at 8.15pm and we go from one extreme to another, with this race being staged over the marathon trip of 946m. Most of these greyhounds are stepping up in trip but Droopys Djokovic coming out of Trap 3 has won two of his last five starts at distances just short of this. He can likely make it three wins from six here.

Another competitive looking open race at 8.35pm sees home favourite Buglys Star take on a number of visiting greyhounds in the Collins Coaches & Allied Deanridge Stayers. Robert Boosey’s charge has been contesting races just below this standard recently but with home advantage and experience over the 592m trip, the wide runner holds every chance.

The Ocean Trailers Bitches Stakes at 8.50pm takes place over 415m and once again offers £500 to the winning bitch. Sundance Saffy coming out of Trap 5 is coming off the back of two good runs including a win over course and distance last time out. Paul Simmonds’ bitch is likely to be a warm order to make it back to back victories.

Abc 300900 & William Hill & Greene King Ipa Marathon Stakes is the ridiculously title 769m event at 9.10pm. Liosgarbh West coming out of Trap 4 doesn’t appear to have the best of draws but does appear to be the most solid animal over this distance having clocked 50.03 when winning here earlier this month.

With prize money increased to £1000 for the 9.25pm The Greene King Old Speckled Hen Stakes, things get a bit more competitive over this 415m event. The six dog Seanis Bet looks to be going the right way and although has a bit to find on the book, this bitch may be able to avoid any potential trouble and take advantage of being the only wide runner in the race.

The highlight of the evening is the £5000 The Bigwin.com Property Stakes at 9.45pm. This 592m event would appear to rest between the two wide runners, Tain Maeve in Trap 5 and Swabys Onenut in Trap 6. Should these two dogs collide at the first bend, Benro Blackie in Trap 2 could well be the greyhound to take advantage.

Trainer Dolores Ruth won her second Irish Derby last night when 5/2 chance Razldazl George managed to keep out of the worst of the trouble filled race and then powered home to win by a short head from the gallant Dream Walker. Razldazl Bugatti, stable mate of Razldazl George, caused all sorts of problems by moving wide early fairly quickly after coming out the traps. Well backed favourite Rockchase Bullet was the greyhound who looked to be handed the advantage but he then collided with Razldazl Bugatti. This allowed the Tom O’Neill trained Dream Walker to get up the inside and and into a healthy lead. Dream Walker was just denied however when Razldazl George got up by a short head with both dogs recording a time of 30.02. Krug Ninety Five was three lengths further back in third spot.

Dolores Ruth said after the race: “It makes it all the more special when we’ve bred him as well. It confirms the form of the English Derby, but especially his courage and astuteness. I don’t know what happens next with him, but I know for us, we are all going to party. It’s a wonderful moment.”

2011 Greyhound Derby Result

1st Trap 4 Razldazl George 5/2
2nd Trap 2 Dream Walker 10/1
3rd Trap 5 Krug Ninety Five 8/1
4th Trap 6 Rockchase Bullet 2/1f
5th Trap 1 Razldazl Bugatti 7/2
6th Trap 3 Rockview Head 7/1

Elsewhere on the card at Shelbourne Park, Mozzletoff landed the 1,500 Euro Ladbrokes.com Richest Greyhound Race in the World over 525m in a time of 28.27. The 4/5f beat 9/2 chance Martinstown Rose by three and a half lengths. In the 9.50pm event, the Ladbrokes.com Bet in Running International Open, 5/1 chance Wonder Wag took the spoils in a time of 42.12 beating the 2/1 favourite Droopys Casanova by three quarters of a length.

The 65th East Anglian Greyhound Derby semi finals take place on Saturday 10th September, with the final on Thursday 15th September. The event is staged at Yarmouth Stadium and is run over a trip of 462m. There is £12,000 in prize money on offer to the winner greyhound, which is an excellent prize when you consider some events are struggling to find sponsorship.

Current market leader for the 2011 East Anglian Derby is the Chris Allsopp trained Ballymac Ace. He didn’t get the best of runs when finishing third behind Yahoo Jamie and Brittons Empire in round two of this event but prior to that had looked very impressive in the first round, winning his heat in a time of 27.46. Yahoo Jamie, trained by Charlie Lister, certainly won’t be without his supporters in the outright market at the 9/2 mark. The wide runner has won both his starts in this competition thus far and should make it to the final with the minimum of fuss.

11/8 chance Fifis Rocket got the better of the 4/6f Taylors Cruise in heat three of the second round. Another Chris Allsopp trained runner, Fifis scored in a time of 27.77 while Taylors Cruise could only manage third place, with Droopys Hector splitting the pair. Fifis Rocket and Taylors Cruise are both 9/2 chances to take the East Anglian Derby crown while Droopys Hector is the rank outsider at 33/1.

We will obviously know more after tomorrow night’s semi finals but greyhound fans could well be in for a cracker next Thursday and the battle between Taylors Cruise and Ballymac Ace in the second semi final is sure to be enthralling.

Romford’s live meeting on Sky last night saw the Jimmy Wright trained Droopys Hester take the £10,000 Coral Champion Stakes Final. Although involved in a bit of bumping at the first bend, the 11/8 favourite managed to hold off the fast finishing Westmead Maldini by a short head. The 5/2 second favourite started slowly but finished like a train and trainer Nick Saava can only be proud of the way his dog ran. Jimmy Wright’s other runner Droopys Luisano filled third place at odds of 9/2. It was a perfect result as far as the betting was concerned with the six dogs finishing in price order. Droopys Hester won in a time of 35.59, slower than his semi final win which was timed at 35.25.

Five other finals took place on the televised card and each were worth £1,000 to the winner. The 8.15 Coral Champions Night Puppy Standard Final was won by the 6/4 favourite Fire Food Chilli in a time of 23.71. Jim Daly calls his pup Shrek but maybe he will get a nicer nickname after this victory!

The Maiden Stayers event was off at 8.35 and Nick Saava had a nice warm up to the Champions Stakes by taking this race with his runner Droopys Greg. The 5/4 fav won in a a time of 35.58. Next on the card was the hurdle race at 8.50. Yet another favourite was successful on a tough night for the bookmakers. Dean Child’s Baltylum Houdini held off a late challenge from Romeo In Miami to win at odds of 7/4 in a time of 24.36.

The Champions Night Standard Final was won by, you guessed it, yet another favourite! Lil Risky returned a 7/4 chance beating track record holder Ardbeg Mentor into fifth on that dogs final career start. Lil Risky clocked a time of 23.86 over the 400m trip. Finally, the Marathon over 750m was won by Kelly Findlay’s Razldazl Pru. The very strong 1/2 favourite led all the way to win by six lengths in a time of 46.78.
